Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS), the national trade body of the country's software and information technology services sector, has given the 'BASIS National ICT Awards' for the fifth time. The award giving ceremony was held at a city hotel in the capital on Monday night (October
31). BASIS President Russell T Ahmed presided over the program while Hon'ble State Minister for ICT Division Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, ZunaidAhmed Palak was the chief guest, Honorable Senior Secretary of Information and Communication Technology Division Mr. N M Zeaul Alam PAA and Md. Jashim Uddin, President of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) were especial guests. This year, 108 awards were distributed in 36 categories to recognize the innovative products and service projects of the country's information technology sector. The best awarded projects will participate in the international competition of the Asia Pacific ICT Alliance Awards (Apicta) which is known as the Oscars of the Asia-Pacific IT sector. Chief Guest the State Minister Junaid Ahmed Palak was not present but in a video message, he said, "Today's winners will fight with countries like Australia, Japan, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka and Malaysia in the competition Apicta which is called ICT’s Oscar. At present there are two million people are involved in the country's ICT sector and our ICT products export to more than 60 countries in the world worth amount to about 1.4 billion dollars. We want to increase it to five billion dollars by 2025 and create at least 3 million job sector. Those who participated in the competition today will fulfill this target in the future.” Drawing attention to innovative technology for the future, the State Minister said that at present world, software is the driving force of the future economy. By 2041 Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's vision-2041, an intelligent, cost-effective, knowledge-based innovative smart developed Bangladesh will be the main driver of our export earnings from software industry. At the same time, the domestic economic activities of Bangladesh will become completely
dependent on the software industry. However, in that program, BASIS president Russell T Ahmed raised three demands to the government. He said, "E-Governance projects are done by domestic ICT institutions. The concerned BASIS member institutions should be recognized for that work. The name of the organization working on the project should be mentioned. This makes it easier for us to get work from abroad as well.” Besides, Russell T Ahmed also demanded to involve BASIS in the country's industry branding and human resource development. He also said, “The best projects those are being awarded today will participate at Apicta. We try to groom them. Our Bangladeshi companies have become champions there in several stages in the past years. We believe that we will bring the award from Apicta this time as well.” BASIS President further said, “Through BASIS National ICT Awards, we select innovative and promising IT products and services across the country through this competition and awards are given to recognize and encourage them. These products and services show us the capabilities of the IT sector in the country as well as in the international arena. This year's event has given special consideration to projects that are effective in implementing Digital Bangladesh to Smart Bangladesh.” However, BASIS Advisory Standing Committee President M Rashidul Hasan served as the convener of ‘BASIS National ICT Awards 2022’, BASIS President's Advisory Committee member Abdullah H Kafi served as the chief judge, Deputy chief judge was Shah Imraul Kaeesh and BASIS Advisory Standing Committee member Liaquat Hossain was the co-convener.
